Longtime Soboba Band leader abruptly resigns

Robert "Bobby" Salgado, the longtime chairman of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, won't say why he resigned his post on Monday.

Salgado, 64, sent a one-sentence press release to local media stating that he was stepping down as of July 2. In an interview with The Riverside Press-Enterprise, he refused to elaborate on his reasons for leaving.

"I'm just going to take a little time for myself. I've been through the good, the bad and the ugly," Salgado told the paper. His son died last year of a drug overdose.

Salgado ran the tribe for nearly two decades. Vice chairwoman Rosemary Morillo will take over until a new election can be scheduled.
