Indian group fails to raise money for center

An Indian organization in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has failed to raise enough money to restore a historic former U.S. Coast Guard station.

Loonsfoot Inc., had two years to raise money to renovate the site and turn it into a cultural center. But the group missed a July 1 deadline to secure at least $1.2 million toward the $3.5 million project.

Loonsfoot co-executive director Jim DeNomie said he hopes to get another chance to find donors. He will try to ask the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe for money.

If the project fails, Milwaukee County plans to demolish the 92-year-old site as early as spring 2008.
