Cherokee chief vetoes Boys and Girls Club funds

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith has vetoed a $17,000 contribution to the Boys & Girls Club in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

The Cherokee Nation Council approved $12,000 for a swimming camp at the club and $5,000 for underprivileged Cherokee youth to attend camps and events throughout the year. The money would have allowed 100 area youth to participate in a two-day swimming clinic featuring Olympic gold medalist Mark Spitz.

Smith vetoed the request, saying the tribe hasn't developed a comprehensive plan for the clubs. A spokesperson said the tribe has provided more than $300,000 to the Tahlequah club.
