Study to focus on Indian children in Montana

The Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders' Council starts a five-year study of Indian children's health this fall.

The Rocky Mountain Tribal Epidemiology Center will work with children in kindergarten through high school. The program starts on three reservations -- Crow, Rocky Boy and Fort Belknap -- and will expand every year to include another reservation.

Researchers will collect information on weight, height, body-mass index, family history of disease, pulse and blood pressure. They will also check for asthma, diabetes-related conditions and other health indicators.

The Indian Health Service provided a $150,000 five-year grant for the study. Tribes also contributed funds.
