Rhode Island governor must testify about raid

Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) must testify about his role in the state's raid of the Narragansett Reservation, a state judge ruled on Friday.
Questions will be limited to Carcieri's orders to state troopers for the July 14, 2003, raid. Carcierci has said he told police to withdraw if they encountered resistance at the tribe's tax-free smokeshop.
That didn't happen and tribal members clashed with state troopers under the watch of television cameras. Seven -- including Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas -- were arrested on a range of charges and now face a trial in state court.
Former Col. Steven M. Pare, who was superintendent of the state police, has testified that Carcieri never gave the withdrawal order.
