Chukchansi Tribe continues disenrollment campaign

After eliminating about half of the people from its rolls, the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians is moving further to restrict membership.

Tribal leaders just approved a resolution that requires people who hold allotments to live within a certain distance of the tribe's territory. That will eliminate some who are currently on the rolls.

In the past year, the tribe has eliminated about half of its membership. Chairman Dustin Graham said 200 of those weren't even Indian.

The dispute prompted comedian Bill Cosby to cancel a show at the tribe's casino. "He is unwilling to be caught in the middle of the dispute," a spokesperson told The Fresno Bee.

Activists are contacting other entertainers to urge them to cancel shows at the casino.
