Gonzales resigns as head of Department of Justice
Monday, August 27, 2007

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned as head of Department of Justice today.

Gonzales has been under fire for his handling of the firings of several federal prosecutors. Some of them accused him of not being committed to Indian Country, where violent crime rates outpace the rest of the nation.

Gonzales was the first person of Hispanic descent to hold the top DOJ position. He previously served as White House counsel, where his staff played a role in the firing of Special Trustee Tom Slonaker at the Department of the Interior.
