Indian voters re-energized for Sen. Johnson

With Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) back on his feet after suffering a brain hemorrhage, all eyes are on his plans for 2008.

Johnson was re-elected in 2002 by less than 600 votes. Support from reservation voters was crucial to his victory.

Craig Dillon, an Oglala Sioux Tribe council member and an organizer of Indian voters, said he expects a repeat performance if Johnson runs again. "I expect a major push in Indian Country to get him re-elected," he tells The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

Johnson is an active member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. "I think they are going to be there for him because of what he has done in the past," Dillon says.

Johnson plans to return to his Washington, D.C., office and be on the Senate floor on September 5.
