Cherokee Nation fines landfill more than $1M

The Cherokee Nation Environmental Protection Commission has fined a landfill company more than $1 million for allegedly violating tribal and federal law.

The commission gave operator Indian Country Investments 30 days to pay the fine. The company could seek a hearing on the charges.

The landfill was fined for leakage from an unlined storage pond, failing to cover accumulated refuse adequately with soil, and excessive methane gas levels.
