Mashpee Wampanaog Tribe still in talks with town

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the town of Mashpee are still negotiating an inter-governmental agreement.

The town want assurances that the tribe will not reopen its failed land claim from the 1970s. The town also wants the tribe to guarantee it won't build a casino in town and will continue to provide public access to tribal sites.

The two sides hoped to reach an agreement in time for an October town meeting. Negotiations began in May, when the tribe's federal recognition was finalized.
