School district combats Indian absenteeism

About 25 percent of Indian students in the Tempe Elementary School District in Arizona have chronic attendance problems, The Arizona Republic reports.

In hopes of boosting attendance rates, the district has started the Native American Absentee Prevention Program. Liaisons will work with families and students to ensure they make it to school as often as possible.

The $3,500 program could be used to pay for alarm clocks for students or cover transportation costs.
