Rumsey Band sues former lawyer, former adviser

The Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians of California has sued its former lawyer and former financial adviser, accusing them of bilking the tribe out of millions of dollars.

In a lawsuit filed in state court, the tribe claims former attorney Howard Dickstein and former adviser Arlen Opper took advantage of the tribe. The two men placed their interests, along with those of others, ahead of the tribe's, the complaint alleges [Press Release].

"There is nothing to do with the truth in this. It is meant to ruin my reputation," Dickstein told The Sacramento Business Journal. "There is not a shred of truth in the allegations."

Dickstein is a prominent Indian law attorney who represents a group of small but financially successful tribes. His clients were the first to negotiate new gaming compacts with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) and split off from the much-larger California Nations Indian Gaming Association to form their own group.
