Oneida Nation keeps focus on domestic violence

The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin has been running its domestic violence program for nearly 25 years.

Gene Red Hail, the coordinator of the Oneida Domestic Abuse program, says violence against Native women can be traced to colonization. "It's written in our history … words like 'squaw' were used to degrade them. It's a learned behavior that goes back generations," Red Hall tells The Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Federal statistics show that one out of every three Native women experiences rape in their lifetimes. The domestic violence rate among Native women is the highest in the nation.

"Men continue to get away with domestic abuse because a lot of women fail to report it," advocate Belinda Brennan tells the paper.. "If there were actual consequences, it could make a difference."
