Indian family cites police mistreatment

Members of an Indian family in Omaha, Nebraska, says police harassed them after they sought help for their 17-year-old son.

Cal Pekas Jr. said police were called because the family was concerned about their son, Dakota. They thought Dakota may have been on the influence of drugs and may have tried to hurt himself or others.

Police responded to the house several times late Saturday and early Sunday morning. The last call ended in a scuffle between family members, who were maced by the officers, and the dispute spilled out into the sidewalk.

Five people, including Diana Pekas, Dakota's mother, as well as a neighbor, a minister who tried to help, were arrested by police. Dakota and his 13-year-old brother, Dylan, were placed in juvenile custody. Dylan's hand was reportedly broken.
