Senate pushed to act on Lumbee recognition
Friday, October 26, 2007

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee is being urged to take action on a bill to recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

Republican Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr, who sits on the committee, were joined by Sen. Daniel Inouye, a Democrat who also sits on the committee, in asking Sen. Byron Dorgan to act on the bill. Dorgan is the committee chairman.

Dole, Burr and Inouye want Dorgan to consider H.R.65, the House's version of the bill that passed in June. They say it will be quicker than taking up S.333, the version that Dole and Burr introduced.

The committee has yet to hold a hearing on Lumbee recognition. A similar bill passed during the prior session of Congress.
