Opinion: Not all Sioux oppose 'Fighting Sioux'

"UND Fighting Sioux; that's a nice sounding name, isn't it? The Standing Rock Warriors - also a nice sounding name, as are Solen Sioux, Eagle Butte Braves and so on.

We use ourselves as a mascot when we see fit, but disagree when others do the same. Let's call that the first contradiction.

Being a member of the Great Sioux Nation is no different to me than being a citizen of the U.S. Those who would call me a sellout in response to this statement, I would call “lost”: Lost in the sense that although their opinion is their own, it contradicts their everyday lifestyles.

Have we all not become Westernized? Do we not go to the grocery store to get food and go to Wal-Mart to buy all sorts of stuff? Do we not hope our children go off to college and get good jobs?

Well, guess what? If you are an American Indian and you answered “yes” to these questions, then you've become Westernized."
