Leaders of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe are meeting with University of North Dakota officials today to discuss the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
The tribe recent reaffirmed its opposition to the "Sioux" name. But a group of Standing Rock veterans and at least one council member say they don't have a problem with it.
UND has to eliminate the nickname and logo within three years unless it can get the support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Nation, another Sioux tribe in North Dakota. It's not clear from news reports whether the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, whose reservation crosses into North Dakota, is covered.
