Standing Rock Sioux Tribe firm on nickname stance
Wednesday, November 28, 2007

Leaders of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe said they aren't dropping their opposition to the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of South Dakota.

Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder said the school should drop the name and logo immediately. “It's part of who we were, not who we are,” he said, The Grand Forks Herald reported.

As part of a settlement with the NCAA, UND agreed to drop the name and logo if it can't get support of Sioux tribes in North Dakota within three years.
