More than 200 people turned up to a hearing on the federal government's nuclear waste repository in Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

The facility is on Western Shoshone treaty lands. Ian Zabarte of the Western Shoshone National Council said the repository was an example of "environmental racism," the Associated Press reported.

More than a dozen tribes are located within driving distance of Yucca Mountain. The Energy Department plans to store up to 70,000 tons of nuclear waste at the site.

The department held a series of public forums on Yucca Mountain all over Nevada. A final one takes place today in Washington, D.C.
