Navajo students pay tribute to women soldiers

Navajo students paid tribute women veterans in an essay contest sponsored by Miss Navajo Nation Jonathea Tso.

The first-place winner was 13-year-old Liz Benally. The eighth grader from Farmington, New Mexico, wrote about her late mother, who served in the Air Force and died when Benally was just a few months old.

"Most people don't think that much about the women out there with the men," Benally wrote in her essay. "I have respect for any veteran, man or woman. I give respect to toward the veterans and the ones that are fighting in Iraq right now."

Tso said she held the contest to encourage Navajo youth to stay connected with their culture and to pay tribuet to women soldiers.
