Catawba Nation loses master potter Evelyn George

Evelyn Brown George, a master potter from the Catawba Nation of South Carolina, died on Sunday. She was 93.

George was known as the tribe's artistic heritage. She urged young Catawbas to learn how to make pottery and regalia.

"We lost a part of our history, who we are," Chief Donald Rodgers told The Rock Hill Herald. "She was crucial to our connection to the past."

George Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award from the South Carolina Arts Commission in 2004. She taught at the tribe's Catawba Cultural Center.
