Southern Ute Tribe examines drilling impacts

The Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado is examining ways to address the environmental impacts of coalbed methane drilling.

Gas seeps from methane drilling contribute to global warming and can cause explosions. The tribe is monitoring the seeps and is considering a plan to capture the gas and market it as energy for consumers.

Separately, the tribe has been trying to extinguish an underground coal fire that has been burning for decades. The tribe decided not to mine the coal in order to limit the impact on the environment.
