Quick trial expected for Aquash murder defendant

Federal prosecutors are planning a quick trial now that John Graham, a Native man from Canada, is being held for the 1975 murder of American Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash.

Marty Jackley, the U.S. Attorney for South Dakota, expects the trial to start sometime in the next two months. He plans to seek a life sentence but won't ask for the death penalty for Graham.

Graham is accused of murdering Aquash, who was Mi'kmaq from Canada, on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He pleaded not guilty last Friday after being extradited from Canada.

A second man, Arlo Looking Cloud, is serving a life sentence for Aquash's murder.
