Bill creates Gabrielino-Tongva state reservation
Thursday, December 13, 2007

A California state lawmaker has introduced a bill to create a state reservation for the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.

Sen. Jenny Oropeza, a Democrat, hopes the bill will help the tribe obtain federal recognition. But the leaders of one Gabrielino-Tongva faction say they do not support it.

The tribe has petitioned the Bureau of Indian Affairs for recognition. Rival factions each claim they are the legitimated leadership.

Oropeza introduced the bill on behalf of one faction. The bill does not authorize gaming on the state reservation.
