NCAI kicks off Native Vote 2008 initiative

The National Congress of American Indians is kicking off its Native Vote 2008 campaign.

NCAI is targeting 18 states with significant Indian populations. The goal is to increase voter registrations and get more people to the polls.

"We know what our native vote effort did in 2004 and 2006," NCAI executive director Jacqueline Johnson told The Everett Herald. "It created a movement like you wouldn't believe."

According to NCAI, Indian voter registration has increased by between 50 and 150 percent around the country. On the Tulalip Reservation in Washington, voter turnout was 70 percent in 2004.
