Opinion: Sioux who support 'Fighting Sioux'

"Dear Standing Rock Sioux tribal family:

We are writing to you on behalf of the Committee for Understanding and Respect and a very large number of concerned Standing Rock Sioux Tribe members, some of whose heritage goes as far back to the Great Sioux Nation.

We recently formed this committee because of the many rumors and false information being generated by those who oppose UND's use of the “Fighting Sioux” name and logo.

The members of this committee strongly believe that having our name associated with a highly respected university such as UND is an honor. But perhaps more than this, we believe the name and logo is a statement about the pride of the Sioux people, our history and our traditions.

We strongly believe that dropping the nickname will result only in destroying years of progress in race relations with the people of North Dakota. We also believe it will eventually result in isolation and a loss of opportunities for the Sioux to inform and bring better understanding of our history, heritage and tradition."
