Native officer fired after citing police racism
Thursday, January 31, 2008

The Ontario Provincial Police fired a Mohawk police chief after he accused his department of "deep-seated racism" against Natives.

Larry Hay was the police chief of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. In a story about a Mohawk land protest, he told a college newspaper that racism in the police force still exists.

It's deep-seated racism, and they will do all kinds of things to show that it isn't so, but we know better," Hay told The Loyalist College Online Pioneer last April.

Hay was suspended after the remarks were published and was fired after an internal investigation. He is suing, saying he was dismissed based on his race.

The Ontario Park Police have long faced criticism from the Native community. A government inquiry found racist behaviors and statements by officers in a 1995 Native protest that ended in the death of activist Dudley George.
