New Mexico tribes in line for $1.4M in state funding

Tribes in northern New Mexico will receive $1.4 million in state funds once Gov. Bill Richardson (D) signs a spending bill.

Tribes were previously barred from receiving grants under a 1983 legal opinion. But the state reversed course in 1999 and said tribal governments were eligible for capital funds.

This year, Pueblo of Pojoaque plans to use $450,000 for a wellness center and traditional ceremonial facility. Tesuque Pueblo will use $250,000 for a law enforcement training center. San Ildefonso Pueblo seeks $200,000 for affordable housing and Nambé Pueblo plans $150,000 for a multipurpose building.

The money for the capital projects comes from a state oil-and-gas severance tax.
