Lumbee Tribe sued by former administrator
Thursday, February 21, 2008

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina treats male and female employees differently, a lawsuit in federal court alleges.

Donna Cummings, a former employee, says men are hired and promoted more frequently by the tribe. She claims former tribal administrator Leon Jacobs retaliated against her when she filed grievances on behalf of another female employee.

Cummings was suspend then subsequently fired as a result of the grievance, she says. She filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which concluded that the tribe violated the law, a move that led to her lawsuit.
