The University of Alaska Fairbanks has been awarded a $1.2 million grant to study Native languages.
Michael Krauss, professor emeritus of linguistics at UAF, says the grant will enable study of Eyak and 10 other languages. Marie Smith Jones, the last fluent speaker of Eyak, died last month at the age of 89.
“These languages are the essence of the thinking of uniquely Alaskan people, who have the right to help retain their language,” Krauss told The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
The grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation.
