Museum to showcase Indian 'New Deal' artists

The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is featuring the works of Indian artists who worked under the federal government's New Deal program.

At least 30 Indian artists in New Mexico took part in the program. Some of them -- like Pueblo potter Maria Martinez, Apache artist Allan Houser and Pueblo painter Pablita Velarde -- became prominent and influential in the art community.

The exhibit runs April 5 through August 31 at the museum. It's part of the 75th anniversary of the New Deal.

Another Santa Fe museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, has a smaller exhibit of Indian New Deal artists running through May 18.
