Navajo Nation council overrides spending veto

The Navajo Nation Council voted 68-8 to override President Joe Shirley Jr.'s veto of a $17 million appropriations bill.

The council passed the measure earlier this month to provide $1 million to help tribal members with weather-related emergencies. But since it included $16 million in other spending, Shirley vetoed it.

The council called a special session and easily overrode the veto last Friday. Delegates said tribal members would immediately benefit from the influx of money.
