Polar bear killed near Alaska Native village
Friday, March 28, 2008

A polar bear was killed near an Alaska Native village, word of which has stirred some interesting comments on The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner's web site.

The bear was far out of its normal habitat. Residents of Fort Yukon were worried the animal posed a threat to the village of about 900 so they went out to hunt it.

Hunters, however, thought they were going after a grizzly. They were surprised when they found out it was a a polar bear, 250 miles away from its coastal habitat.

The story has generated some negative comments, mostly critical of village residents for going after the polar bear. Some have blamed global warming since the animal traveled so far.
