The chief of police for the
Rosebud Sioux
Tribe of South Dakota resigned and two police officers have reportedly been fired amid a controversy that is affecting criminal cases in tribal and federal court.
Charles Red Crow resigned at a meeting on Friday, Chairman Rodney Bordeaux told The Rapid City Journal. He will remain on duty until the end of the month.
Nearly 300 criminal cases have been thrown out of tribal court due to the lack of proper certification for tribal officers. At least three criminal defendants in federal court are raising the same issue.
Red Crow has said his officers were certified through the tribe's self-determination contract.
