DJs suspended for remarks about Native women

Two radio DJs were suspended "indefinitely" and ordered to undergo sensitivity training after making offensive comments about Alaska Native women.

State officials and Native leaders expressed outrage after radio show hosts Woody and Wilcox from KBFX 100.5 made an off-color remark about being at "real" Alaskan. "Have you made love to the Yukon River and peed in a Native woman?" one of the DJs said.

The Alaska House of Representatives voted to condemn the remarks and the Alaska Federation of Natives compared the DJs to radio shock jock Don Imus, who lost his job over racial remarks.

Alaska Native women are the victims of assault and rape at rates higher than the general population.
