Editor of Fort Peck Reservation paper wins award

Bonnie Red Elk, the editor of an independent newspaper on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana, has received the 2008 Montana Free Press Award.

Red Elk started The Fort Peck Journal after being fired from her job as editor of the Wotanin Wowapi. The Fort Peck Tribes shut down the Wotanin Wowapi in February after nearly 40 years of publication.

Red Elk received her award during a ceremony at the University of Montana's School of Journalism last Friday.
