Navajo woman to run tribal college consortium

Carrie Billy, a member of the Navajo Nation, will take over as executive director of the
American Indian Higher Education
Consortium on June 1.
Billy currently serves as deputy director. She will replace Gerald Gipp, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who plans to retire.
Billy, an attorney, was the first executive director of the White House Initiative of on Tribal Colleges and Universities during the Clinton administration. “For years our presidents had to focus on day to day survival for their institutions,” she tells Diverse Issues in Higher Education. “Now that we’ve done a lot of infrastructure building, we can turn to sustainability."
