Mashpee Wampanaog Tribe seals deal with town

After two years of negotiation, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe signed an intergovernmental agreement with the town of Mashpee, Massachusetts.

The deal requires the town to support the tribe's land-into-trust application. The tribe wants to have 120 acres in trust for its initial reservation.

In return, the tribe is promising not to open a casino at the site. Separately, the tribe wants to have 539 acres in another town placed in trust for gaming purposes.

The tribe also signed a deal over the town cemetery. The tribe agreed to honor the rights of non-tribal members who are buried there in order to take over the site and have it placed in trust.
