Navajo president wants to reduce council seats

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. wants to reduce the number of seats on the Navajo Nation Council from 88 to 24.

Shirley filed paperwork to put the issue to tribal voters. He needs at least 16,000 signatures to get on the ballot.

Separately, Shirley wants voters to approve a "line item" veto as part an effort to reform the tribe's government. He says he should be able to reject individual appropriations or projects in legislation passed by the council.
