Shakopee Tribe reclaims ancestral territory

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota is stirring some local controversy with its land buys.

The tribe has purchased 2,000 acres since the 1990s. Gaming revenues and low land prices have sped up the buys.

Not all of the land is in trust, however. Local officials usually fight the tribe's land-into-trust applications, and in one prominent case from the Clinton administration, the Bureau of Indian Affairs said the wealthy tribe didn't need the land.

The latest skirmish involves 1,600 acres. Scott County opposes the request.
