Sen. McCain vows to appoint conservative judges

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) said on Tuesday he will appoint more conservative judges if he is elected president.
McCain cited
Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and
Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. as the "model" for his nominees. To advise him on his potential choices, he formed the Justice Advisory Committee, a group of conservative-leaning attorneys and scholars including former solicitor general Theodore B. Olson, who appealed two Indian trust cases to the
U.S. Supreme Court during the Bush administration.
McCain, the former chairman of the
Senate Indian Affairs Committee, has come under fire among conservatives for brokering an agreement with Democrats that allowed some of President Bush's controversial nominees to receive votes on the Senate floor. One nominee,
Janice
Rogers Brown, has gone on to write opinions against Indian interests in three high-profile cases.
