NCAI discusses BIA nominee with Kempthorne
Friday, May 16, 2008

The National Congress of American Indians met with Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne on May 14 to discuss leadership at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Assistant secretary Carl Artman, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, is resigning May 23. With only a few months remaining in the Bush administration, NCAI wants a replacement named quickly.

Jackie Johnson, the executive director of NCAI, said Majel Russell, a member of the Crow Tribe of Montana, would be logical choice. Russell currently serves as principal deputy assistant secretary.

Kempthorne could appoint someone in an acting capacity.
