Cancer surivors urged to maintain Native diet

A new book by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium urges Alaska Native cancer survivors to return to a subsistence diet.

"Traditional Food Guide for Alaska Native Cancer Survivors" is based on ten years of research that shows traditional foods help cancer survivors fight fatigue, avoid disease and maintain high levels of protein and fiber in their diet. It contains nutritional information about subsistence foods, as well as ways to prepare them.

Cancer was rare in Alaska until high-fat foods and processed foods were introduced. Alaska Natives now have the highest rate of cancer deaths than any other group.
