Carl Artman is leaving his job as head of the
Bureau of
Indian Affairs tomorrow but not before one final appearance before the Senate committee that supported his nomination as assistant secretary.
Artman was strongly backed by the
Senate Indian Affairs
Committee at a time when his nomination was being held up in the Senate.
But after a little more than a year in the post, he announced his resignation, a move that
Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the chairman of the committee, said was disappointing.
Artman will testify this morning at a hearing to address backlogs at the
Interior Department. The hearing starts at 9:30am and will be broadcast at
http://indian.senate.gov/public/webcast.ram.
The witness list follows:
Panel 1
THE HONORABLE CARL J. ARTMAN
Assistant Secretary -

American Indians; President, Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican
