Cherokee chief criticizes English-only proposals

Cherokee Nation, Chief Chad Smith said he will continue to fight efforts to make English the official language in Oklahoma.
Smith criticized state Rep. Randy Terrill, a Republican, for pushing the issue this year. He said the only goal was to get more Republicans to the polls.
Smith compared the English-only effort to forced assimilation of Indian people. He said the state should encourage people to speak more than one language.
