Small crowd for public hearing on Makah whaling
Tuesday, June 3, 2008

About 50 to 100 people attended the second public hearing on the Makah Nation's whaling plan last night.

Only five people gave oral testimony. Three were against whaling and two were for it, The Seattle Post-Intelligence reported.

Tribal leaders attended the meeting to determine public interest. Keith Johnson, the president of the Makah Whaling Commission, said the science and the law supports the tribe's whale hunt.

The final public hearing takes place this Thursday, at 10am in the NOAA Auditorium, 1301 East-West Highway, in Silver Spring, Maryland.
