Native hockey coach fired by New York team
Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Ted Nolan, a member of the Garden River Ojibwa First Nation from Canada, was fired as coach of the New York Islanders hockey team on Monday.

Nolan was hired in 2006. In his first year of coaching, he led the team to the playoffs in the 2007 season.

The team continues to perform well but both sides cited "philosophical differences" in the firing of Nolan, who was the NHL's coach of the year in 1996-1997.

The team's roster includes Chris Simon, an Ojibwa from Canada who has been on extended leave since an injury incident last December.
