Retrial starts in Narragansett smokeshop raid case

A Rhode Island state trooper who broke the ankle of a member of the
Narragansett
Tribe went on trial today.
Trooper Kenneth Jones is accused of using excessive force against Adam Jennings during the state's raid of the reservation on July 14, 2003. Jones kept twisting Jennings' ankle until it broke.
A federal jury awarded $301,000 to Jennings but a judge dismissed it. The
1st Circuit Court of
Appeals reinstated the award and ordered the judge to consider pending motions.
Judge Ernest C. Torres ended up granting a state motion to dismiss the case so Jones is back on trial.
