Deadline looms for EPA on Navajo power plant

The Environmental Protection Agency has until July 31 to make a decision on the Navajo Nation's controversial power plant.

The tribe applied for an air permit for the Desert Rock Energy Project more than four years ago. A federal judge finally told the EPA it must give the tribe an answer.

The law firm handling the case for the tribe and its partner, Sithe Global Power, is confident that EPA will grant the permit. But further litigation is expected.

Navajo activists and residents who live near the power plant site in Shiprock, New Mexico, say it will destroy the environment and harm sacred sites. Officials in New Mexico and Colorado also have concerns.
