Republic of Lakotah plans one-year investigation
The Republic of Lakotah will spend a year investigating tribal corruption, police brutality and discrimination on reservations in South Dakota.

Activist Russell Means, who announced the breakaway nation last year, said a grand jury will investigate complaints from all eight reservations in the state. Information will be turned over to state and federal authorities, as well as Congress, but the republic will not be laying charges against anyone.

Earl Tall and Betty Janis said they asked Means to investigate police harassment. They said complaints against tribal officers are ignored.

Means said the grand jury will investigate how tribes are spending federal funds.
